Yes. Iodine has been used since the civil war as a disinfectant, however it was difficult to control. In the 1930's alcohol was used to dissolve iodine (known as tincture of iodine), but the concentrations were dangerously high. In the 1950's iodine was attached to plastic at a molecular level, and other dangerous chemicals used to control the release of iodine. This is Povidone and Betadine. However, when used correctly, iodine is a world class disinfectant.
